COVER’s First Virtual Live Development Project Offline Performance Using Unreal Engine -hololive Indonesia 5th Anniversary LIVE Chromatic Future-

Tokyo, JAPAN — COVER Corporation (Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan, CEO: Motoaki Tanigo) is proud to announce that it successfully held the first offline performance as part of its Virtual Live Development Project launched last year using Epic Games’ real-time production tool Unreal Engine. 

“hololive Indonesia 5th Anniversary LIVE Chromatic Future” was held in Hall 6 of the COMIC FRONTIER 21 ICE BSD in Tangerang, Indonesia on November 15, 2025 by the VTuber group hololive Indonesia, which incorporated next-generation visual expression fully powered by Unreal Engine.

This allowed for new expressions, high-quality background visuals that changed in real-time to match the performance and dynamic lighting enabling fans to feel like the talents were even closer to them for a deeper sense of realism and a more immersive production.

COVER x Unreal Engine: For next-generation visual expression

1. Innovative performance and production

Using the Unreal Engine’s standard VFX tool Niagara, we are able to have more dynamic stage production, including fire and raw smoke visual effects using fluid simulations, that would not be possible in reality, making talent performances far more dramatic.
We have also created a unique workflow by integrating TouchDesigner so that performances can be controlled almost like operating physical stage equipment at a live venue to maximize real-time control of production.

2. High-quality graphics and talent model expressions

We are able to create one-of-a-kind visual experiences using original technology based on Unreal Engine’s high-performance rendering capabilities to seamlessly blend real backdrops with anime-style talent models. In particular, we have optimized the technology we developed using Unity for Unreal Engine by modifying the Engine to include our own shader HoloToonUE, so that we can add anime-style shadow expressions that are compatible with multiple light sources, rain effects that trickle off of the surface of talent models, and detailed expressions such as complex lighting patterns that change depending on the weather and time of day using custom color grading. We are also able to add intricate movements such as the natural swaying of talents’ hair and flowing skirts bringing the talents even closer to fans and giving them the most realistic experiences possible.

3. Lighting technology enriching the offline event experience

An important element that really determines how realistic a performance feels is our innovative lighting and shading technology. We have made full use of Unreal Engine’s ray tracing capabilities, one of its key features, to depict natural shadows from numerous light sources coming from atop the stage in tremendous detail, and are able to greatly improve how real the talents and background appear by precisely optimizing shading that would have led to a decline in performance in the past, thus providing a deeply immersive experience. 
We have also optimized the DMX lighting control protocol used at real-life live production venues for virtual environments. By doing this, lighting directors are able to control complex lighting in the same way as physical live venues.
